You went hiking with some friends, took off on your own for a while, and got lost. You've wandered around all day looking for your friends, but you can't find them anywhere. What is the first thing you do? Have you brought food, water, and maps along, or are you the freewheeling type who just comes as you are? What thoughts are going through your head? How do you feel? Write about the situation.

(You'll have to come see Mrs. Thacker for the paper and if you have any questions.
December 13, 2010
1. Grab two pieces of paper from the top of the sorter (two different colors)
2. Write an example of a simile or metaphor about a snowflake.
3. Personify a snowflake
4. Cut out two snowflakes. Write the simile on one and the personification on the other.
Hmmm...can't remember what those are? No worries. Simile is comparing two things using like or as. Personification is adding life-like characteristics to things that are not alive.
Example of simile: The snowflake falls like a graceful dancer, twisting and turning through the gray sky.
Personification: The snowflake, determined in its purpose, pushes through the heavy, night air and blankets my windshield in a merciless fury.

During the course of our lives, we have "defining moments". We stand at a crossroads and we could take the left path or the right. We could take a job and move to France. We could date this person or that person. We could hang out with this friend or that. We could play this sport or that sport. Write about a tricky decision you've had to make. Which path did you take? Do you think you made the right decision? (1/2 page)

The air was bitter cold as I stepped tentatively on the treacherous, ice-covered sidewalk. I steadied myself in a clumsy, jerking motion. "I hope he appreciates this," I grumbled. I was shopping for the one gift he wanted and I needed to brave the blizzard in order to pick it up. Snow blinded me and I ducked my head as the heavy flakes pelted my winter hat. I opened the door to the old shop at the end of the street. I hadn't really noticed it before, but he had said what he wanted most was inside this dilapidated building. The bell on the door tinkled as I yanked it open. What I found inside was almost indescribable. (half page)

November 1, 2010
Eric leaned back on his plastic cafeteria chair. He scanned his surroundings and sighed at all the familiar faces. "Same stuff, different day," he muttered to himself. It was always the same here at Monroe High School. Nothing interesting ever happened. He heard the crackle of the loud speaker as Sarah, the extra-perky office aide, read today's announcements. More sport practices after school. Play auditions in the auditorium...whatever....blah, blah, blah. Then, all at once the room grew eerily quiet. The usually exuberant voices died down and everyone turned their astonished eyes toward the school's large windows. Eric couldn't believe it. Choking a little on his Mt. Dew, Eric's chair slammed down on the floor. It was a magical moment. There, just outside the window on the brown grass was....( 13 lines)

"Honestly!"
Do you believe you are generally an honest person? Do you find yourself telling people what they want to hear, rather than how you really feel? Are you willing to lie a little if you need to make an excuse? Or, are you really blunt? Do you tell the truth, even if it will annoy people?
